More protein. A more sensible grocery bill.

Compare portions, use familiar staples and spend where convenience earns its place.

Compare what the package actually provides

A big tub or a high-protein label can hide a small number of useful portions. Take the package price, serving count and protein per serving from the label. Our calculator converts those figures into a cost per 25 grams of protein.

That comparison does not tell you everything. Fibre, taste, energy, allergies and how much food you will waste still matter. Beans may bring useful fibre alongside protein; a powder may be convenient but is not a complete meal.

Build meals around flexible staples

Try a few affordable foods that you genuinely enjoy: lentils, beans, tofu, eggs, plain yogurt, canned fish or a meat option that is good value locally. Prices vary, so compare your own shop rather than assuming one food is always cheapest.

Use frozen vegetables and dry grains to make portions easier to adjust. A leftover ingredient becomes better value when it appears in more than one recipe rather than expiring at the back of the fridge.

A supplement is an option, not the starting point

Resistance training and adequate total food intake come first. A 2018 meta-analysis found that protein supplementation can support training adaptations, while gains in fat-free mass did not keep increasing beyond an estimated total intake of about 1.6 g/kg/day in the studied healthy adults. This is a population estimate, not an individual prescription.

If you already meet your needs through meals, buying more powder may not be useful. If you have a medical condition or need personalised nutrition, speak with a qualified dietitian.

Make the comparison this week

Pick three foods you buy often. Enter the price and label values into the calculator, then choose one practical swap. Keep the change if it saves money and still makes meals enjoyable.
