Bodybuilding focuses on muscle development
Bodybuilding and hypertrophy training aim to develop muscle size and balance. Programmes often use a variety of exercises and repetition ranges to train muscle groups across the week. Competition bodybuilding adds presentation and judging requirements beyond everyday muscle-building.
Powerlifting focuses on three competition lifts
Powerlifting tests the squat, bench press and deadlift. Training usually gives those lifts a central place alongside supporting exercises. A competition total is about performance under a particular federation’s rules, so check the event rules when preparing to compete.
Olympic weightlifting is a distinct technical sport
Weightlifting competition centres on the snatch and the clean and jerk. These movements involve technical skill, speed and positioning as well as strength. If this is your goal, learn with a qualified weightlifting coach rather than treating the lifts as a quick addition to an unsupervised beginner session.
Choose the outcome that interests you
You can enjoy elements from more than one approach. Start with a main goal for the next few months, learn the relevant movements and track progress in a way that matches that goal. Your nutrition routine should support consistent training and recovery, with individual requirements assessed when needed.
